First, be aware that you or your family will be responsible for paying the funeral bill. No charity will bail you out if you go into deb for a funeral. Take a realistic look at your budget, before calling a funeral home. Decide what you can comfortably afford — without sacrificing money you need for daily living. Keep that amount in mind as you make the arrangements.

KEEP A FUNERAL COST DOWN

There are several ways to keep a funeral costs down, including:

• Opting for a green burial 

• Cremation  

• Considering whole-body donation

• Selecting an affordable casket or urn

There are also government programs a family can look into, especially if the deceased has been receiving benefits. Signing a form at the county coroner can authorize the release of the body to the state or county for burial or cremation. It may be possible to pay a fee to recover the ashes if the family would like them.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO MEET FUNERAL EXPENSES ◼︎

The Human Resources Administration (HRA) Office of Burial Services (OBS) assists individuals in need of financial assistance to meet funeral expenses for a deceased low-income New York City resident (decedent). Payment may be authorized to reimburse funeral expenses that have already been paid or pre-approval for payment may be authorized for the cost of a planned funeral.
